About This Site

Top Dog Travel Carriers publishes reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on the gear that moves dogs safely: soft-sided carriers, car harnesses, back seat hammocks, collapsible travel bowls and pop-up crates. Everything here is written from the point of view of a volunteer who drives a rescue transport leg every month, with her own dog usually along for the ride.

Dog Travel Safety

Never leave a dog alone in a parked car. Temperatures inside a vehicle climb fast, even on a mild day with the windows cracked, and can kill a dog in minutes.

Dogs belong in the back seat, not the front. A deploying airbag can seriously injure or kill a dog, and a loose dog can distract the driver or be thrown in a sudden stop. Secure carriers, crates and loose gear, because anything unsecured in a vehicle can become a projectile.

"Crash tested" is not one single governed standard for pet products, and no harness, carrier or crate can guarantee a dog's safety. Read each manufacturer's size limits and instructions, and measure your dog before buying. Airline approval varies by airline, so confirm the rules with your carrier before you fly.

Soft-sided carriers and pop-up crates will not hold a determined or panicked dog. Supervise your dog in them, and never leave one alone inside. On long drives, stop regularly for water and a walk on a leash. If your dog has anxiety, car sickness or any health concern, talk to your veterinarian. Nothing on this site is veterinary advice.
